Metzeler riders storm home to a sensational Outright and 4 class victories
April 2009
The Australian 4 Day is one of the world's toughest Enduro events and this years event was one of the closest battles in the 31 year history of the event.
With the absence of team mate Stefan Merriman, Jarrod Bewley opened his campaign with a solid day 1, placing third at the conclusion of Thursday's competition. The Metzeler rider stepped up the intensity and quickly reeled in the lead pairing, making an impressive 17 seconds up on former team mate Chris Hollis at the end of day 2 to take the lead.
The 22-year-old extended the buffer between himself and second place with another fast, consistent performance on day 3. The gap was now 22 seconds, and growing. With two of Australia's top motocross riders snapping at his heels, Bewley knew he would have to give the final day of competition, the motocross test, his all. Despite a sluggish start, he made his way back up to third and managed to maintain a winning margin at the wave of the final chequered flag. Bewley took a deserved and popular outright victory by an impressive 9 seconds, also clinching Championship class 4 in the process.
Bewley's teammate, ‘King' Kirk Hutton wrapped up the win in Championship Class 3 (250cc 4-Stroke) by 7.7-seconds over Kawasaki young gun Josh Green after a nail biting final moto. Hutton was the first non-450cc rider to finish in the top-10 Outright, claiming 6th place.
Metzeler racers easily wrapped up the Veterans and Masters Championships with Orange's own Stuart Bennett the fastest Veteran and Geoff Ballard smoking the Masters by more than 10-minutes.
